The Boise Camera Club web site (www.boisecameraclub.org) is the official source for our print competition rules. Members who participate in print workshops must be familiar with these rules. If you have any questions please ask one of the more experienced members of the club for assistance.

A print workshop is conducted the second Tuesday of each month.

Allowable prints per workshop: a maximum of three (3) current month prints and one (1) make-up can be submitted for judging on any given print night, for a maximum total of four (4). You can choose to participate in color or monochrome, large or small, but the total for the night cannot exceed this maximum. In addition, because the large color is the largest category, there will be no more than two (2) large color prints accepted per person.

The Print Divisions:

  • Color: (chemical or digital). Includes both color by maker and commercial prints (processed by lab or other professional services). Prints done commercially should be identified so they can be considered in PSA's ICPC (International Club Print Competition).
  • Monochrome by maker: (processed or printed by the photographer - chemical or digital).
  • Assigned Print: An assigned subject (see table at right) is made for each month for the Assigned Print competition. Each member can enter one (1) print per month. It can be either a monochrome or a color print of the Assigned subject for that month. No make-ups are allowed. This division is judged during each print workshop and a winner is announced in the club's newsletter.

Print Size:

  • Print exposed size can be no smaller than 5x7 inches and no larger than 16 x 20 inches. This means the amount of the image that is physically showing after mounting. That means if you start with a 5x7 inch print and mat it so 1/4" all the way around is covered it will not be allowed.
  • In all three print divisions you can compete in two sizes, small and large.
  • "Small" (96 Square) is a print (including the mount or mat board) that is no larger than 96 square inches. Ninety-six square is typically an 8 x 12 inch picture. However, it can be \ any dimension between the minimum size and 96 square inches.
  • "Large" is a print (including the mount or mat board) that is between 96 square inches to a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Print Identification:

Each print must be marked on its back on the upper left corner, with the following:
  • Name of maker
  • Address
  • Print title
  • Club name
Each print must be marked on its back on the upper center of the picture with the following:
  • Monochrome (96 sq. or Large)
  • Color (96 sq. or Large)
  • Commercial (96 sq. or Large)
An "Intra-club Print Competition" entry form must be completed and stuck on the back of each Print entered as shown below. (Forms are available from the club on Print night.)

Make-up Print Entries:

"Make-up" print(s) can be brought to print workshops if you have been unable to bring three color and/or monochrome prints each month. Make-up entries shall be marked as "make-up" on the entry form and are not eligible as an Assigned Print. Your allotment of six (6) prints per month can be any combination of color, monochrome and make-up prints. It is suggested (but not required) that members who know they will not be present at future workshops leave prints with another member to enter on the month(s) you will not be present.

Member Competition Classes:

Year-end Club Competitions are divided into three (3) Member Classes.
  • New: Members that have been entering print competitions for less than two years.
  • Regular: Members that have entered print competitions for more than two years.
  • Junior: Members under 16.

End of Year Awards:

Year-end awards are made during the annual February "Awards Banquet". Members competing in the print awards can submit up to five of their prints (small or large) in each of the two (2) divisions, (color and monochrome), that had been entered in competition during the year. Commercially processed prints can be included in the color print selections. If a member had only one print in the year's competition, it is eligible to be sent in for year-end judging and awards. The deadline for entering these prints is the first general meeting in January. If a print is not available at this time for this competition due to inter-club competition, it may be submitted in the following year. These entries are used in selecting the following awards:

Best-Five Awards: These awards are for quality prints. They are given for both monochrome and color participation to both regular and new members. The scores of each person's five (5) prints will be totaled and the highest total receives the award for consistently high quality.

Prints of the Year: These awards are given to both regular and new members
  • Color Print of the Year
  • Monochrome Print of the Year
  • Print of the Year (Bob Higgins Award): Selected from winners in the color and monochrome competitions.
  • Print of the Year, Junior

Monthly Print Workshops Scoring or Judging:

Scoring or judging is done by a three-person judging panel. Judges are club members who volunteer to be a judge for a night. Each judge has a scoring range of five (5) levels. The resultant scores are totaled for each print, thus the total score will range from a low of fifteen (15) to a maximum of twenty-seven (27) points. Judges do not score their own or spouses images. The missing score will be the average of the two remaining judges, rounded to the next higher whole point. Each print will be critiqued after scoring and before going on to the next print.

Level Point Value Total Point Value
    Excellent 9 27
    Good 8 24
    Above Average 7 21
    Average 6 18
    Below Average 5 15

Interclub Competitions:

During nine (9) months of the year, (October - May) the Print Chairs select the "best" four (4) or five (5) prints (by scores and using their judgment) to be sent to 4C's (Columbia Council of Camera Clubs), PSA (Photographic Society of America) ICPC (International Club Print Competition) or other groups for additional judging and awards.
