Boise Camera Club - Competitions
Competitions
Competition, when accompanied by commentary or critique, is the easiest way to learn and grow in photography. It's why BCC devotes two meetings a month to competition. Seeing images, and listening to knowledgeable critiques, help us all improve our photographic abilities.
Club competitions give immediate feedback on not just our own images, but those of fellow club members.
We also compete - for competition's sake - in interclub competition activities. See the bottom of this page for more information on those activities.
Club Projection Competitions
Members may submit three (3) images for judging each month. "Make-up" images will be permitted to allow a member to reach the thirty-three (33) maximum but a member should not submit more than four images for judging at one meeting. (The club does not have regular meetings in August). Make up images are images that the member was not able to show in a previous month.
The BCC belongs to two other camera clubs. This means we compete as a club in the 4Csdigital competition (EID) and PSA/ICPC. Some of the best images chosen after being shown at the BCC projected night will be sent o to the 4Cs and PSA/ICPC.
The Boise Camera Club uses an Optoma Model EP 739 (1024x768) projector. Specifications can be found at Optoma's website.
See the Projection Night Meeting page for specific instructions.
Club Print Competitions
Print Night Workshops are held on the second Tuesday of each month. They are fun and educational. The Boise Camera Club encourages all members to participate in the Print Night Workshop. Critiques are offered by club experts to help both amateur and experienced photographers grow and improve. Listening to critiques on all levels of photography presents an accelerated learning curve. All Members who participate in print workshops must be familiar with the following rules in order for the workshops to run smoothly. If you have any questions please ask one of the more experienced members of the club for assistance.
Scoring or judging is done by a three-person judging panel. Each judge has a scoring range of five (5) levels. The resultant scores are totaled for each print, thus the total score will range from a low of fifteen (15) to a maximum of twenty-seven (27) points. Judges do not score their own or spouses images. The missing score will be the average of the two remaining judges, rounded to the next higher whole point. Each print will be critiqued after scoring and before going on to the next print.

Club End of Year Competition - Print
Year-end awards are made during the annual February "Awards Banquet". There are five (5) categories for End of Year.
1. Small Monochrome
2. Small Color
3. Large Monochrome
4. Large Color
5. Created Altered Reality.
Please see the parameters above for full descriptions of what constitutes each category.
Up to two (2) images can be submitted in each category by a maker. You may enter as few as a single print in one category or up to two (2) images in as many categories as you would like. You do not have to enter all categories.
Images may be submitted at any of the first three meetings in December. Make sure they are given to Roxanne Overton. She will get them entered. They must have the same labeling as monthly print competitions. The deadline for entries is the Projection meeting in December. See the calendar for this year's date.
The prints will be judged in January and the winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Banquet in Feb. Again, see the calendar for this year's date.
Club End of Year Competition - Projection
The Boise Camera Club will have an award for End of Year Competition with a 1st and 2nd Place Runner-up. There will also be awards in the Assigned Category and a Creative Category competition for digital images. An image must have been judged during the year to be eligible for the End of Year Competition. Images shown in June and July, while not formally judged, will be eligible for the awards program. Assigned subjects are identified for each month. Assigned images must be judged in the month identified for that subject (there are no "make-ups" for Assigned images) and are part of the members allowed images for judging. The definition for the Creative Category is "altered reality".
Members wishing to compete in the Best of Year Category may submit up to five (5) digital images for consideration. Members may also submit up to two (2) in both the Assigned and Creative categories for digital images. An image can be submitted in only one category, even if it has been re-named.
Interclub Competitions:
During nine (9) months of the year, (October - May) the Projection Chair select the "best" five (5) projected images to be sent to 4Cs (Columbia Council of Camera Clubs) each month.
We also compete in PSA (Photographic Society of America) ICPC (International Club Print Competition) for additional judging and awards. Those events are on a bi-monthly basis and include CAR - Creative Altered Reality prints - which 4C's does not include.
Competition chairs make thier choices based on scores, and it the case of ties, personal preferences on what they think will do best in the competition judging.
